The world's most powerful digital camera, the Dark Energy Camera at the Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory in Chile, accidentally captured a 570-megapixel image of Comet Lovejoy as it was scanning the southern sky. The comet was passing about 51 million miles from Earth when the picture was taken. Each rectangular section in the ultra-high resolution image represents one of 62 individual fields of the camera.
