A documentary that aired on British television this week is being heralded for having 'solved' the infamous Bermuda Triangle mystery, but their answer leaves a lot to be desired. The presentation, titled The Bermuda Triangle Enigma, primarily focused on the case of the USS Cyclops which vanished in the notorious hot spot of high strangeness back in 1918. By way of a team of experts from the University of Southampton and a model of the ship sitting in a specially-designed water tank, the program proceeded to demonstrate how the vessel was likely taken down by a 'rogue wave.'
While the showcase, which you can see a clip of here, was decidedly impressive, the much-heralded 'solution' to the mystery almost certainly spawned yawns from longtime students of the Bermuda Triangle mystery. That's because the 'rogue wave' theory has been bandied about by scientists and skeptics as a possible reason for the disappearance of ships for decades. Despite the stale nature of the show's conclusions, it has inspired yet another round of headlines declaring that the Bermuda Triangle has been solved.
What stands out as rather strange is that this seems to almost be an annual occurrence as, around this time last year, an Australian scientist was also being lauded for having solved the Bermuda Triangle mystery. In that case, Dr. Karl Kruszelnicki at least provided answers for a number of different facets of the phenomenon rather that simply blaming 'rogue waves' and calling it a day. But, as we pointed out at the time and as is the case with this latest documentary, the explanations echoed those of the many skeptics and scientists who have looked at the mystery over the years.
Fortunately, in a refreshing change of pace, the television critics in England seemed to pick up on this lack of imagination or new insights as the show was largely panned. Amazingly, many expressed disappointment that the program served to demystify the Bermuda Triangle rather than revel in the odd nature of the legendary story. One critic in particular may have put it best by asking, "wouldn't it be fun if, just for once, one of these programs went to town backing up a theory rather than debunking the bunkum?"
Coast Insiders don't have to wait for such a development as they can learn more about the Bermuda Triangle mystery by checking out the 7/19/2017 edition of the program featuring researchers Rob MacGregor and pilot Bruce Gernon. During that fascinating conversation, they detailed perhaps the most tantalizing aspect of the enigma which often goes overlooked in mainstream media coverage: reports of 'electronic fog' experienced by pilots flying over the location and how this baffling phenomenon may be forming some kind of tunnel or bubble that takes ships and planes to 'somewhere else.'
