Authorities in New York State have something of a macabre mystery on their hands after some hikers turned over a burial urn that they had stumbled upon while exploring a nature trail. The creepy discovery was reportedly made earlier this week when the unnamed residents were exploring Rockefeller State Park Preserve in the town of Mount Pleasant. Presumably uncertain about what to do with the peculiar find, the hikers removed it from the site and gave it to the New York State Police, who took to social media "seeking the public's assistance locating the friends and family belonging to a burial urn."
According to authorities, "all normal identifying information has been removed from the urn," leaving them uncertain as to who or what may be contained in the burial vessel. While the hikers likely had the best intentions in mind when they took the odd object from the trail, not everyone agrees with their decision as, unsurprisingly, several people on social media offered a decidedly different take on the matter. "Absolutely no one goes hiking with an urn that doesn't intend on leaving it there," declared one individual, who implored police to "put it back." This sentiment was echoed by several others who argued that the urn was likely intentionally placed in the park and that it should be returned to where it was found.
While those critical of the vessel being removed make a compelling case, for now the urn remains in the custody of the authorities until someone comes forward to claim it. Sadly, should no one contact them, it would appear that some unfortunate individual's final resting place may wind up being in a found property room of the state police barracks rather than in the state park where their loved ones had originally intended. With that in mind, what's your take on the strange moral dilemma? Should the hikers have left the urn where they found it or did they make the right decision by taking it to the cops?
