They're baaack! Giant African snails have returned to the state of Florida, after being eradicated twice before over the years. The invasive creatures can grow up to eight inches long and have a ravenous appetite eating more than 500 different types of plants, and even chowing down on stucco and concrete walls!
And if that wasn't bad enough, the snail, known to lay thousands of eggs in its lifespan, can also carry salmonella and the parasite, rat lungworm, which can cause meningitis in humans. Consequently, parts of Pasco County are under quarantine after the mollusks were spotted in the city of Port Richey, north of Tampa.
Called "one of the most invasive pests on the planet" by the US Department of Agriculture, surprisingly, some people like to keep them as pets, though that is actually considered illegal. More on the pesky critters here.
