NASA's Juno spacecraft, which orbits the planet Jupiter, recently captured a series of stunning views of the gas giant's moon Io — the most volcanically active world in the solar system. The craft came within 13,700 miles of Io and snapped some of the most detailed images of the volcanic world ever using a powerful onboard camera called JunoCam. The images were taken on July 30, 2023, as Juno made its 53rd orbit around Jupiter, then refined by imaging experts and posted to the Juno mission website. Many of the darker areas in the image above are lava fields from Io's many erupting volcanoes.
