Man Attacks 'Mona Lisa' Painting With Cake

The world's most famous painting, the Mona Lisa, was attacked on Sunday, when a man dressed as an elderly woman in a wheelchair, smeared cake on it, reportedly as a protest over climate change. Luckily, the painting is encased in protective glass (and has been so since the 1950s when it was damaged when someone splashed acid on it).

A witness at the Louvre where the 16th century da Vinci masterpiece is exhibited said after the bewigged attacker jumped out of the wheelchair, he initially tried to break the bulletproof glass.

As the 36-year-old vandal was removed by security guards, he called out to the museum patrons: “Think of the Earth. There are people who are destroying the Earth. Think about it. Artists tell you: think of the Earth. That’s why I did this.” He was said to be taken away for a psychiatric evaluation, and the Louvre has filed a complaint.
