Mars is ready for it's close-up, reaching its closest distance to Earth today. Click here to view a portrait of the planet taken by the Hubble telescope hours ago, showing Hellas Basin. The recent images are being called the "best Mars globe photos ever."(1)
With these unprecedented views of Mars, NASA is inviting the public to submit location suggestions to be photographed by the Mars Global Surveyor. Details are here(2). To view some existing images of the Martian surface, check out this gallery(3).
