Mass Trial Sees 97 Convicted of Sorcery-Related Murders

An astounding 97 people in Papa New Guinea were found guilty of murder in a mass trial resulting from a jaw-dropping 2014 rampage.

The incident in question saw a whopping 189 men don war paint and trek over six miles to a village that they believed was home to sorcerers.

Upon arriving, the mob destroyed parts of the village and murdered seven people in gruesome fashion.

In a testament to how seriously sorcery is seen in the country, suspicion of such activity was actually an allowable legal defense for murder up until just the year before the attack took place.

No longer protected by the archaic law, the 97 individuals found responsible for the killings now face what will no doubt be a harsh punishment for the heinous actions.

Many residents hope that the mass conviction can help to stem the tide of what is described by some as a hysteria surrounding sorcery in the country that recently led to one official being ambushed and attacked.
