Mysterious Ancient Mass Frog Grave Found in England

By Tim Binnall

An enormous cache of frog bones was discovered during the excavation of an ancient site in England and archaeologists are stumped as to why so many of the creatures were buried in the peculiar mass grave. The puzzling find was reportedly made as researchers were studying the remnants of a centuries-old home near the village of Bar Hill. During the dig, they uncovered a trench that measured a whopping 45 feet long and inexplicably contained approximately 8,000 frog bones. Described as "extraordinary" by archaeozoologist Dr. Vicki Ewens, the discovery is particularly perplexing to researchers as they have no explanation for the origins of the mysterious mass grave.

According to the researchers studying the remains, the bones show no signs of having been cut or burned, which would seem to preclude the possibility that the creatures had been eaten. However, archaeologists did not entirely rule out that scenario, since they could have been boiled and such a cooking method would not be evident. One intriguing theory is that the amphibians died naturally as part of some kind of disastrous event or disease and that their remains were subsequently dumped in the giant trench. For now, though, archaeologists concede that they are stumped as to how or why the mass grave came about. With that in mind, what's your best guess for the source of the baffling horde of frog bones?
