Mysterious Monolith Appears on Welsh Hill

By Tim Binnall

Hearkening back to the strange craze that swept the globe in late 2020, a mysterious ten-foot-tall metal monolith has appeared in Wales. According to a local media report, the curious triangular pillar (which can be seen below) was discovered over the weekend atop a sizeable hill in the community of Hay-on-Wye. Richard Haynes, a jogger who stumbled upon the mysterious monolith, initially suspected that it was some kind of scientific instrument related to rainwater, but his assessment quickly changed when he got a closer look at the oddity, musing that "it was way too tall and strange for that."

"I went up to it and it was about 10-foot-tall at least and triangular, definitely stainless steel," he recalled, "it was hollow and I imagine pretty light. Light enough for two people to carry it up and plant it in the ground." A frequent jogger around that area, Haynes indicated that this was the first time he had encountered the curious pillar, suggesting that it popped up not too long ago. As one might imagine, the appearance of the mysterious monolith has been met with mixed reviews among residents with some expressing appreciation for the piece, while others say that it is an eyesore.

The Welsh monolith is the latest chapter in the mystery monolith phenomenon that began back in November of 2020 when the first such piece was discovered in the Utah wilderness. The appearance of a second pillar in Romania, followed by another in California led to a global craze wherein the easy-to-create object began popping up in all manner of places around the world. Time will tell whether the peculiar pillar in Wales winds up being a solitary case or if it marks the start of a new round of monolith madness.
