Pets Run For Mayor in California Town

Residents in a small California neighborhood, tired of human politics, have gotten their cats and dogs to throw their hats in the ring and run for mayor as a children's project.

Two dogs and two cats campaigned hard to become mayor of the small community of Golden Gate in Oakland, across the bay from San Francisco. Wally, a long-haired orange and white feline, was the incumbent, running on a “pro speed bump” platform, making the streets safer for pets with slower traffic speeds. Challenger Betty, a grey female, ran on a campaign based on more (legal) catnip. Mimi the Shiba Inu and Macy the pitbull were the canine challengers. The campaigns are actually being conducted by neighborhood children, encouraged by their parents to learn about the democratic process.

There is a rich history of animals running for political office, with many towns around the world electing dogs, cats, and even goats.

Presumably, the votes are still being counted in his hotly contested race, as no winner was announced at press time.
