While one would think that boasting a perfect record for World Cup predictions would afford some measure of protection for a 'psychic' animal, that was apparently not the case for one unlucky octopus in Japan who wound up being eaten! Until recently, the clairvoyant creature known as 'Rabiot' was riding high after correctly predicting the outcomes of all three of Japan's group stage games in this year's tournament. This was particularly remarkable because the country had a win, a loss, and a tie in the three games, suggesting that perhaps Rabiot had some genuine psychic skills.
As one can imagine, the octopus' feat garnered the attention of the Japanese media, who celebrated the creature's surprising success. However, it has now been revealed that Rabiot's fifteen minutes of fame have come to a gruesome and, some might say, delicious end. After images of the creature hanging in a fish market began circulating online, his owner stepped forward to confirm that, indeed, Rabiot was no more. Although he expressed appreciation for the animal's possible psychic abilities, Kimio Abe, a fisherman by trade, explained that he had to put his business first and, as such, sold the animal at a local market.
His now-former owner hopes that the legacy of the clairvoyant-turned-calamari can continue by way of a successor 'psychic' octopus. "I hope that the second Rabiot will also give all the outcomes correctly and that Japan will go all the way," he declared. We'd say that the new octopuses' life might depend on it, but, based on the original Rabiot's fate, it seems that the ultimate outcome for his understudy is a foregone conclusion. Let's just hope he doesn't see it coming.
