Shark's Scars Suggest Battle with Giant Squid

By Tim Binnall

A distinct pattern of scars spotted on the back of shark photographed swimming off the coast of Hawaii suggest that the creature had battled a giant squid. The remarkable image was reportedly taken by deep sea photographer Deron Verbeck last summer. When he subsequently posted the photo online, it caught the attention of shark experts who were astounded by what they saw.

The series of dots and circular patterns on the back of the shark, scientists theorize, are scars that came from the tentacles of a giant squid. Should that be the case, the photograph would constitute the first documented interaction between the two monstrous denizens of the deep. As for how such a turn of events occur, researchers postulate that the shark probably attacked the squid and the odd scars were defense wounds created by the cephalopod.
