The Ambitious Plan to Revive the Woolly Mammoth by 2028

Scientists at Colossal Biosciences are working on a plan to bring back woolly mammoths by 2028 using advanced gene editing techniques like CRISPR. Their approach involves introducing specific genes from mammoths into Asian elephants, which share 95% of their DNA with the extinct species. By identifying key "target genes" responsible for traits like the mammoth's woolly coat, they aim to create elephant-mammoth hybrids. These hybrids would be grown from artificial embryos and implanted into Asian elephants for gestation. However, despite their optimism, scientists acknowledge the risks and uncertainties in reintroducing the species into the wild.
