There are few things more chilling than a place which once bustled with human activity but has now become totally deserted.
YouTube user Top5s has compiled a compelling collection of five locations from around the world that have been abandoned by people and may still harbor residents of a supernatural variety.
Among the locations featured on the video is the Japanese island of Hashima which transformed from an uninhabited location into a thriving coal mining site almost overnight in the late 1880's.
Boasting all the amenities of modern life, the tiny island eventually became the home to thousands of Japanese families.
But when the coal ran out in the 1970's, the inhabitants quickly followed, leaving behind a veritable 'ghost island' complete with apartments that still contained most of their possessions.
One of the reasons for the hasty exit may have been the island's reputation as a cursed site due to its serving as a slave labor camp for captured prisoners of war during WWII.
Other chilling abandoned sites include the Italian island of Poveglia, where sick people were forced to live until they died during the plague, and the 'cursed' American mining town of Bodie, California that is said to be the home to a number of ghosts from the gold rush days.
