An amateur gold hunter in Australia saw his patience pay off in a big way when he unearthed a massive nugget worth a staggering $160,000. The unnamed prospector reportedly made the remarkable discovery while searching for riches in a region of the state of Victoria famously known as the 'golden triangle.' As he combed through the area with a fairly inexpensive metal detector, he stumbled upon a sizeable rock, which he subsequently brought to gold dealer Darren Kamp in the hopes that it could worth something. Not only did his suspicions turn out to be correct, but the value of the nugget wound up wildly exceeding his expectations.
"He said, 'do you think there's $10,000 worth?,'" the gold dealer recalled, "and as soon as it hit my hand, I said, 'try $100,000.'" To Kamp's amazement, it was then that the prospector told him that he was actually only holding half of the nugget and that he left the remainder of the rock at his house. When put together, the discovery weighed a whopping ten pounds with approximately five-and-a-half pounds of that being gold. Dubbed the 'Lucky Strike Nugget,' Kamp indicated that the "once-in-a-lifetime find," which he purchased from the prospector, is worth a jaw-dropping $160,000 and serves as proof that there are still riches to be found in the region that was once the site of a legendary gold rush nearly two centuries ago.
