An enormous fireball that streaked through the night sky on Wednesday evening was observed by witnesses in a dozen states. Almost certainly created by a meteor burning up as it entered the Earth's atmosphere, the remarkable moment reportedly occurred shortly before 7 PM Eastern Standard Time. To date, the event has generated a whopping 335 reports to the American Meteor Society from individuals in Connecticut, Delaware, Indiana, Massachusetts, Maryland, Michigan, New York, New Jersey, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia and West Virginia as well as the District of Columbia and Ontario, Canada.
The length of the various sightings depended upon where exactly one was observing the meteor, which had a northeastern trajectory, with some only seeing the fireball for just a handful of seconds, while a few witnesses marveled that they observed it for a staggering 20 seconds. Thanks to the proliferation of cameras across the country, the wondrous event was captured on video by several security systems and dashcams. Fortunately, as of now, there is no indication that any portion of the space rock survived its fiery journey through the atmosphere to come crashing down on any unsuspecting individual or their property.
