Early on Saturday, an intense fireball burst over Ontario, Canada. The space rock turned out to be a small asteroid that was identified by astronomers just before it plunged to Earth. Estimated to be only about three feet in size, the American Meteor Society received reports from well beyond Ontario, including the states of Maryland, New York, Ohio, and Pennsylvania.
In addition to the bright flash of light, some of the witnesses described loud booms that accompanied the sighting. "I heard it and felt it almost like my house moved. Thought a generator exploded nearby," said Twitter user @TimsDoubleD. More at EarthSky and the New York Times.
