Police in Michigan responded to a rather unusual call this week after a concerned resident reported seeing a chupacabra. According to a local media report, the strange incident occurred this past Wednesday evening when a woman in the community of Jerome Township phoned 911 claiming that the infamous cryptid was lurking outside her home and, as if that were not odd enough, the creature was accompanied by a capybara. Despite the wholesale weirdness of the call or perhaps because of it, police were dispatched to investigate the report of a blood-sucking chupacabra and its docile rodent companion roaming around the area.
An amusing recording (heard above) of the exchange between the 911 operator and the officer who received the assignment captures the absurdity of the situation. After hearing that a woman named April "wishes to report an animal out back she believes could possibly be a chupacabra," the cop does something of a double take and asks the dispatcher "what’s the animal?" Upon receiving confirmation that, indeed, the resident had reported seeing the cryptid, the officer indicates that he is heading over to the location and, following several seconds of silence, he deadpans "there’s been a high amount of sightings of those in that area lately, by the way."
As one might imagine, there was neither a chupacabra nor a capybara to be found when police arrived on the scene. Sheriff Myron Greene later explained that responding officers "verified there was no evidence of any strange animals" and when the woman was asked why she might have thought that she had seen the creatures, "she said she was coming off using some intoxicated substances." Despite that revelation, the woman did not get into any trouble for making the misguided call to 911 as Greene mused that "she honestly somehow believed those animals may have been there."
