Video: Perseverance Rover Films Monstrous Dust Devil Swirling Along Surface of Mars

By Tim Binnall

NASA's Mars Perseverance rover captured footage of a monstrous dust devil swirling along on the surface of the Red Planet. According to a press release from the space agency, the remarkable scene was filmed on August 30th and unfolded approximately two-and-a-half miles from the exploratory vehicle "at a location nicknamed 'Thorofare Ridge.'" According to their calculations, the dust devil measured approximately 200 feet wide and, based on the shadow of the formation, appears to have been a whopping 1.2 miles tall. NASA explained that observations of dust devils on the Red Planet allow for the space agency to "better understand the Martian atmosphere and improve their weather models."
