A bizarre statue bearing a striking resemblance to an alien being was recently unearthed in Mexico, though an examination by archaeologists indicated that the puzzling piece is not an ancient depiction of an otherworldly visitor. According to a local media report, the curious sculpture (seen isolated below) was discovered last Wednesday by maintenance workers clearing out a drainage channel in the city of Acapulco. Pictures of the peculiar find were subsequently posted to social media and quickly went viral with many speculating that the weird-looking entity was an alien. Ironically, that wild theory turned out to be correct, however the origins of the sculpture were not quite so fantastic.
When experts from Mexico's National Institute of Anthropology and History examined the unearthed piece, they determined that the depiction of the entity was unlike anything found in pre-Hispanic culture. This led them to conclude that the piece was not archaeologically significant. On the contrary, they indicated that "the piece seems to correspond to a series of current manufactured sculptures that reflect a popular imaginary of aliens, made by artisans from western Mexico." As for how it wound up in a drainage channel, it is believed that the statue came from a home that was destroyed when Hurricane Otis swept over the area last autumn.
