The streets of a small village in Portugal were flooded by a staggering 600,000 gallons of red wine following a mishap at a local distillery. The weird incident reportedly occurred this past Sunday morning in the tiny town of São Lorenco de Bairro. Located on a hill in the community is Levira Distillery, which is where an enormous storage unit full of red wine suddenly burst open, sending a deluge of the drink pouring down into the town. Making matters worse, the force of the flood as it initially unfolded inside the distillery caused a second similar-sized container to topple over, which exacerbated the situation considerably.
Concerned that the 600,000 gallons of red wind could spill into a nearby river and contaminate it, local officials scrambled to divert the flow and, fortunately, their efforts were a success. While no one was hurt as a result of the odd incident, which lasted about an hour, there was some property damage, and at least one resident's cellar wound up being flooded. For their part, Levira Distillery issued a statement expressing regret for what had occurred and taking "full responsibility for the costs associated with cleaning and repairing the damage."
