A dragonfly swarm of biblical proportions descended on Rhode Island's coast last week. Sunbathers at Misquamicut State Beach were startled when the skies darkened with tens of thousands of noisy insects. The massive migration was a rare sight for the area, but wildlife biologist Ginger Brown believes the dragonflies were searching for a new home after their last wetland habitat dried up.
Despite resembling a divine plague straight out of Exodus, the buzzing bunch of bugs posed no immediate danger to people at the shore. Witnesses appear relatively calm in video from the event, with many just staying still while filming on their phones. Some beachgoers, such as Madeline Ferrante, felt they had no other choice. "I was laying down, and I didn't want to get up at all because I'd get smacked with a face full of dragonfly," Ferrante told WPRI.
