A webcam watching over a volcano in Indonesia caught sight of a peculiar ball of light passing over the site, though its origins would seem to be terrestrial in nature. According to a local media report, the curious illumination was filmed early Tuesday morning in the city of Jakarta by a camera set up to observe the active Mount Merapi volcano. In the video, which has gone viral online, a sizeable ball of light can be seen streaking across the sky before seemingly disappearing from view. "We don't have the capability to observe celestial bodies like this phenomenon," an official in charge of the camera system initially declared, "so we can't be sure what objects are seen in the video."
As one might imagine, the lack of an explanation for the anomaly set off considerable speculation online with many suggesting that the glowing orb could be extraterrestrial. However, an official with Indonesia's Space Research Center later told reporters that the agency had determined that the object was a Falconsat-3 satellite burning up upon reentering the Earth's atmosphere. Oddly enough, that explanation has actually been challenged by some skeptics who have located an airplane that was flying in that specific location at the time of the incident in question.
