A strange disturbance filmed by a bewildered witness at an Argentine lake spawned supernatural speculation online, though experts say the weird scene has a scientific explanation. According to a local media report, Edgar Alfredo Tapia Mesplatere captured the peculiar footage during a visit to Lake Nompehuen earlier this month. In the video, a sizeable circular patch of bubbling water appears on the otherwise calm surface of the lake as the witness marvels at what he is seeing.
That sense of wonder understandably extended to Argentine social media users after Mesplatere posted the footage online. Some theorized that the man had stumbled upon a monster that inhabits the lake or perhaps a supernatural demonic entity known to the indigenous Mapuche people as a wekufe. However, scientists who saw the video were quick to offer a more down-to-earth cause for the curious scene as they indicated that the frothing water was likely brought about a limnic eruption wherein carbon dioxide is released from the bottom of the lake due to geothermal activity.
