A viral video purportedly showing a UFO zipping across the sky in Ibiza has been revealed to be a hoax to generate hype for a lavish new nightclub set to open next year. The remarkable footage, which was said to have been filmed by tourists near an iconic islet known as Es Vedra, made headlines and spread like wildfire after it was posted on the official TikTok account of the popular tourist destination late last month. Given where it originated online, some skeptical observers speculated that the rather fantastic video could have been some kind of marketing stunt and, on Monday, their suspicions were proven correct.
The unfortunate news was broken in a video (seen above) starring actor Will Smith, who played off his Men in Black fame to 'solve the case.' The viral UFO footage was ultimately revealed to be something of a teaser for nightlife mogul Yann Pissenem's announcement of a new 'hyperclub,' dubbed [UNVRS], that is set to open next year in Ibiza. In a testament to the phenomenon's current place in the zeitgeist, a similar marketing stunt was orchestrated earlier this year by singer J Balvin, who claimed to have filmed a black triangular craft over New York City. Alas, that viral video wound up being a hoax to hype his Coachella performance that also happened to feature Will Smith, who we politely ask to stop helping people promulgate fake UFO videos.
