Woman Recalls 'Floating Above Her Body' During Brain Surgery

Pam Reynolds Lowery's experience during a high-risk brain surgery, which involved inducing a "near-death" state, has become one of the most compelling cases of a near-death experience. Due to a large aneurysm near her brain stem, doctors performed a standstill operation, lowering her body temperature, stopping her heart and breathing, and draining blood from her brain to prevent rupture. Although her eyes were taped and she wore headphones emitting loud clicks to block auditory input, Pam reported witnessing her surgery from above the doctor’s shoulder, describing specific details about surgical tools and conversations that she could not have observed through normal means. She even described seeing deceased relatives, including her uncle, who encouraged her to return to her body. Cardiologist Michael Sabom, among other experts, has found her account persuasive, believing it adds to evidence of consciousness persisting beyond clinical death, despite skepticism attributing such experiences to anesthesia awareness.
