The Fat Switch / Ghost Hunting Tech

Date

Hosted byConnie Willis

In the first half, acclaimed scientist Dr. Richard J. Johnson joined Connie Willis (info) to discuss a key discovery behind obesity-- it's triggered by a biological switch that makes us insulin resistant and fat. He found that eating sugary foods actually increases a person's appetite. Sugar and fat, he explained, are connected to obesity and weight gain, with the sugar increasing hunger and the fat content of foods adding calories. The fructose from the sugars causes our energy to drop, as it becomes stored fat, and this can lead a person to eat more, he said. Many of our foods have added sugar-- with people diet's as high as 15-20% sugars, he reported. When consuming foods high in sugar, he suggested eating them more slowly as this lessons the fructose effect.

While carb-heavy foods like potatoes, rice, and bread don't have sugar in them, the body makes glucose from the starch so they can have the same weight-gaining effect, he noted. Eating bread with a spread on it like avocado reduces the sugar transformation, he added. Johnson found evidence that dehydration (such as from salty foods) can contribute to weight gain, and he recommended drinking a glass of water before a meal. He also discovered that foods high in the umami (savory) taste produce uric acid in the body, increasing eating because the body's energy drops.

Troy Hunt is a paranormal investigator who uses specialized equipment for his work. In the latter half, he revealed his ghost-hunting inventions and technology, including the Para4ce Quad, which does multiple detections like EMF and vibrations, and the Kinect SLS camera, which can be used in absolute darkness (as well as full light). The Kinect SLS camera worked originally with the Xbox system, set up to track the body while playing games-- this is when people first started noticing "stick figure" anomalies, he detailed.

The Kinect SLS camera has an infrared light projector, with the infrared dots revealing human shapes based on movements, he explained. Hunt believes that in many cases, the curious stick figures that appear could represent ghosts or spirits (view related footage). During the last hour, he shared a variety of EVP recordings made in St. Augustine and Florida, including a child's voice at a cemetery seemingly saying, "Here I am." Hunt also enthused about spirit box devices as a live, sometimes more dynamic method of communicating with spirits rather than just making recordings.
