Calling himself an “extreme futurist,” Dr. James Canton is the CEO of the Institute for Global Futures, which advises corporations and governments on anticipating future trends. He expressed his opinion that tech breakthroughs would replace oil with hydrogen, solar, and “nano-energy,” which Canton defined as "the ability to manipulate matter on an atomic level" and change the way energy is generated and used.
He said that most tech innovations have come from America and stressed that this must continue, or quality of life and US competitiveness would suffer. He cautioned that the US should make science and technology education a top priority.
Canton foresaw that within a decade, we would be able to "manage cancer as a disease" that will be treated with drugs and medical devices, and that genetic mapping would pre-screen people for diseases and disorders that could be treated early, extending millions of lives. He also addressed climate change as a primary issue facing the world, and warned that "the level of complexity of the challenges that are facing us outpace the capacity of our leaders' understanding of how to deal with it." We have to get to another level of consciousness to solve it, he added.
