  • About the show

Author Dr. Colin Campbell talked about his book, The China Study, a comprehensive study of the relationship between nutrition and health in counties around China, as well as his early animal research in which he examined milk protein as a cause for tumor growth.

Campbell, who was raised on a dairy farm and fed a traditional animal-based protein diet, said his research conducted in the 1970s showed a dramatic correlation between casein, the main protein in cow's milk, and tumor growth in animals. According to Campbell, tumor growth could be 'turned off' by replacing casein in an animal's diet with plant-based protein. From this early research and his work feeding malnourished children in the Philippines -- where he observed high incidents of liver cancer in children who ate animal protein -- Campbell concluded that casein is "the most relevant chemical carcinogen ever discovered."

After reading a massive survey by the Chinese government about how much cancer existed in 2,400 counties in China, Campbell organized a scientific study to look for a relationship between an animal-based protein diet and cancer. Campbell found that many diseases could be directly attributed to the consumption of milk and animal-based protein, including most cancers, heart disease, diabetes, obesity, auto-immune diseases like rheumatoid arthritis, type-1 diabetes in children, and even teenage acne.

Campbell also noted that even relatively small intakes of animal protein can cause health problems. He estimated that by eliminating the consumption of meat and milk, one could substantially reduce the risk of the aforementioned diet-related diseases by as much as 80% to 90%.

    666 or 616?

"This calls for wisdom. If anyone has insight, let him calculate the number of the beast, for it is man's number. His number is 666." (Revelation 13:8)

In the second half of the first hour, Hebrew Bible scholar Dr. David Penchansky discussed whether the number of the beast (as recorded in the book of Revelation) is 666 or 616. He pointed out that 616 is a very old tradition, but not as old or widespread as the use of 666 in the early Christian manuscripts.

Penchansky also detailed how 666 and 616 can be viewed as alpha-numeric codes that represent the names of people. According to this theory, both numbers can apply to the name 'Nero Caesar,' he said. Ultimately, we cannot know for sure, Penchansky explained, because "we don't have the key [that the original readers had]." 666 may best be understood simply as a number that stands for supreme evil, Penchansky concluded.
