Bigfoot & Southwest Cryptids

About the show

Filling in for George Noory, host Dave Schrader (email) was joined by cryptozoologist JC Johnson (additional link), who shared his research and experiences with cryptids in the Southwest US. He recounted details from his 1999 bigfoot encounter at Blue Ridge Reservoir in the Mogollon Rim area of Arizona. Johnson and a friend were camping on a ten by fifteen foot rock on a lake when they heard a high-pitched shrill scream and the sound of something moving through the trees. "I saw a huge outline of a very large body in the moonlight," Johnson said, adding that the shrieking creature began throwing rocks and other forest debris from the ridge above the camp site.

When the creature stopped its deafening cry to take a breath it sounded like a 300-pound lung filling up with air, he recalled. Johnson admitted the encounter shocked him and his friend, but suggested bigfoot's aggressive behavior was likely caused by their presence in its territory. After the creature left, still screaming, Johnson investigated and found the trail it had made coming in and leaving. He recommended other interested researchers set up cameras then build a large bonfire and sing loudly to summon the creatures close to the camp site. "They come in and check you out and they watch you," he revealed.

Johnson discussed the case of a young woman who was plagued by a Nightstalker that would tap on her windows and walls at night. A three-clawed track was found outside the house and night cam footage revealed something large and skinny in the vicinity. The creature was estimated to be over nine-feet tall and, according to one eyewitness, had a face similar to the monster from the horror movie Jeepers Creepers, Johnson explained. Corn plants in a nearby field were knocked down flat and a Navajo elder told Johnson about how Nightstalkers fly off the mesa and glide into the field. "For all intents and purposes we're dealing with a demonic gargoyle torturing this young lady," he proposed. Johnson also talked about the Skinwalker phenomena and the process by which an initiate transforms into an animal, his own experience with a black-eyed female, and the existence of miniature T-rexes.

The final hour of the program featured Open Lines.
