Keeping the Beat / Open Lines

About the show

Legendary drummer Kenny Aronoff discussed his extraordinary career and how he became one of the most sought-after musicians in the music business today. Aronoff recalled the moment when he was ten years old and watched The Beatles' televised performance on The Ed Sullivan Show. "I just knew at that very moment that's what I wanted to do for the rest of my life," he said. Aronoff recalled meeting his musical heroes, surviving Beatles Ringo Starr and Paul McCartney, fifty years later when he played with them for the CBS special, "The Night That Changed America: A Grammy Salute to The Beatles."

Aronoff commented on how COVID-19 has been yet another blow to the live concert industry. Fortunately, Aronoff operates his own studio where he lays down drum tracks for other artists and business has been booming. There are big challenges ahead for live entertainment next year, but a COVID-19 vaccine, rapid testing, and restricting attendance to healthy concertgoers may allow concerts to begin again, he suggested. Aronoff shared a story about the time he was 'arrested' for stripping down to his boxer shorts while playing a John Mellencamp show. In the second hour, Aronoff took listener questions as well as played various percussion instruments. ZZ Top's Billy Gibbons phoned in to briefly chat with Aronoff. "It all comes back to the backbeat and, brother, you've got it," Gibbons said.

Open Lines followed in the latter half of Friday's program. Gary in British Columbia recounted a Bigfoot encounter his friend had when they were in grade 5. According to Gary, his friend Mark asked to borrow his baseball mitt for PE class but it was lunch time and Mark lived close, so Gary told him to run home and get his own glove. About two minutes after Mark left there was a frightening shriek from the woods. "I heard a faint yell and then I heard something else," he said, noting the teachers called the police about it. When Mark arrived back to school he was as white as a ghost, Gary remembered. Mark described smelling rotten meat, seeing something big washing his hands in the creek, then standing (8-ft tall) and growling at him, Gary reported.

Ed from Charlotte, North Carolina, admitted he is glad President Trump is fighting the election results. He pointed out that 2000 democratic presidential candidate Al Gore contested the results of the election for 37 days, but already many are asking Trump to step aside. "We should have to have re-voting in all these [contested] states,' Ed suggested, noting there have been irregularities including a software glitch that awarded thousands of votes cast for Trump to Joe Biden. Annie in Alabama told George she was stuck in a break room with indigestion. She proposed criminal charges be brought against any person found tampering with the votes. "Everybody that's done anything like that needs to be locked up," she said.

The final half hour featured a replay from 9/1/2017 of Chase Kloetzke discussing new DNA tests run on the Starchild Skull.
