Jimmy Hoffa Disappearance / Exploring the Paranormal

About the show

A specialist on organized crime and political corruption investigations since 1974, author and independent investigative journalist Dan E. Moldea has published ten nonfiction books. In the first half, he discussed his investigation of Jimmy Hoffa, his disappearance, where he thinks his body may be, and a possible connection to the JFK assassination. Hoffa, who was president of the Teamsters Union until 1971, vanished in 1975. An informant told the FBI that Hoffa had been murdered in Detroit, stuffed into a 55-gallon drum, and loaded into a truck bound for New Jersey. He was likely taken to a toxic waste dump in Jersey City known as PJP Landfill that a crime family owned, Moldea noted. At the time of his disappearance, Hoffa had become paranoid and was planning to reveal what he knew about organized crime, and that's why he was silenced, Moldea concluded (earlier, Hoffa had been sentenced to jail time for various criminal activities).

Radar experts recently announced that they'd found a spot in the NJ dump that looks like buried steel drums. Attorney General Bobby Kennedy's war on organized crime led to JFK's murder, Moldea suggested. He was the first investigator to make the case that Hoffa teamed up with New Orleans Mafia boss Carlos Marcello, and Tampa Mafia boss Santo Trafficante to arrange the murder of President Kennedy in November 1963. "Jim Garrison (the New Orleans DA who investigated the JFK assassination) was a complete and total stooge for Carlos Marcello," Moldea declared, and Garrison's purpose was to "deflect attention away from Marcello and the Mob from their involvement in the JFK murder."

In the latter half, journalist Scott S. Smith joined by visionary artist Sandra Wells talked about their work exploring and experiencing different paranormal aspects and their interactions with various luminaries in the field. They also shared their views on UFOs and alien visitations. Smith recalled interviewing Dr. Dean Radin in 1998. Radin had been teaching at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, and doing ESP experiments sponsored by Robert Bigelow, the aerospace magnate, who's played a central role in getting the Pentagon interested in taking UFOs more seriously. Radin was fired from his teaching job after his first book on ESP came out.

Wells introduced Smith to two famous psychics, Uri Geller and Peter Hurkos. The two were brought to the US by parapsychology researcher Andrija Puharich, Wells recounted, noting that he wrote books about his investigation of them (later in the show, Geller called in for a brief conversation). While initially believing that alien visitation was extraterrestrial in origin, Smith later concluded that was unlikely. "If the aliens were really in charge as an advanced civilization, would they have sat around for 168 million years waiting for the dinosaurs to develop" only to decide this wasn't working out?, he pondered. While concurring with researcher David Jacobs that the aliens who contact us are malevolent in nature, Smith suggested they aren't very powerful in our dimension and are relegated to "play at the edges of reality."
