Paranormal in the Bible / Search for the Mokele-mbembe

About the show

Ken Ammi is a long-time researcher and lecturer on issues pertaining to worldview philosophies and various religions. He joined guest host Richard Syrett (Twitter) in the first half to discuss his research into 'Biblical Paranormology,' which examines what the Bible has to say about otherworldly beings, including angels, demons, the Nephilim, and giants. "If we were to speak of the supernatural proper, that would only regard God... God is the only being who is ontologically in his nature and essence outside or beyond nature," Ammi explained, noting "all of his creation is part of the natural even if part of it is paranatural or paranormal."

Angels are the most commonly referred to paranormal beings in biblical texts, he continued. Ammi dispelled some myths about angels, pointing out they are not spirits, nor omniscient, and they do not have wings. The addition of wings to angels was made by artists who wanted to depict angelic beings in biblical scenes in a way that would make them different from humans. This is because the 'malakim' angels in the Bible look like human males, he revealed. According to Ammi, this category of angel moves like the wind and has a three-tiered hierarchy (Angel of the Lord, archangels, lower angels). He also talked about other types of heavenly beings, including seraphim and cherubim.

Deep within the largely unexplored Congo Basin forest lies the Mokele-mbembe, a semi-aquatic creature whose shape and dimensions resemble those of a sauropod dinosaur. During the latter half of the program, filmmaker Alex Brecher talked about his new documentary, which explores the life of a man named Michel Ballot, a former lawyer who abandoned his career 15 years ago to search for the animal following a lead from one of his trackers to the creature's lair. Ballot goes to the region multiple times a year to collect evidence, Brecher reported, adding, "I'm quite sure that he will find something one day; I mean there's too many proofs that [Mokele-mbembe] exists."

The location where Mokele-mbembe is said to inhabit is within the Congo Basin, an area the size of Europe, along the border between Cameroon and the Congo on the Cameroon side along the Chari River, Brecher explained. Several centuries ago, a missionary visited the region and collected testimonies from locals who described a giant clove-footed sauropod-like dinosaur, he continued. The name Mokele-mbembe means "one who can stop the flow of rivers," Brecher added. He spoke about accompanying Ballot on an expedition where they found large footprints that locals confirmed belonged to Mokele-mbembe. "We found some new evidence during that first expedition... something exists out there," he said.
