Farming Challenges / Bigfoot & Cryptids

About the show

Brian Reisinger grew up on a family farm in Wisconsin and worked with his father before entering the worlds of business journalism and public policy. In the first half, he shared his experiences growing up on a family farm and the pressing issues facing American agriculture today. "We've lost 70% of our farms in the past century," some 45,000 farms per year, he pointed out, which poses a significant threat to the nation's food supply, and is connected to rising grocery prices. He further warned of foreign investments in US farmland, stating, "The amount of farmland owned by foreign investors is still fairly small, but the pace is alarmingly fast." Overall, the land devoted to farming has remained somewhat stable in recent years but has increasingly become consolidated by fewer owners, he explained.

In his research, Reisinger found that each era of the farm industry has had its own hidden history-- there was the shift from rural to urban of the population; the 1980s farm crisis, and the way "government's decisions wiped out farms by the drove;" the impact people didn't realize from globalization; and what happened during COVID to the food supply chain. While most farms are still family-operated, many are struggling to survive under various economic pressures, though the growing desire for sustainable and locally sourced food could help revive them, he continued. He also touched on mental health issues affecting farmers, underscoring the emotional toll of farming's challenges. Though farmers and environmentalists are sometimes pitted against each other, Reisinger believes they share many concerns such as soil health.

Author and podcast host on the "Bigfoot Michigan Rob" YouTube Channel, Rob Karnafel, covers the world of cryptids and all things strange. In the latter half, he discussed his personal encounter with a Bigfoot, as well as tales of other cryptids and high strangeness. His intriguing encounter took place in 2018 during a fishing trip in Michigan's Manistee National Forest, where he saw a "humanoid looking" creature with "reddish-brown fur" and a face reminiscent of someone with Down syndrome, which transformed into something terrifying as it emitted a powerful roar. "I could feel the reverberation," he said, recalling how the sound caused his girlfriend, Cindy, to fall into the water. After the encounter, the couple cut their vacation short, and he immersed himself in research about Bigfoot. Tragically, Cindy passed away just two months later, leaving him in a "dark place," and wondering if her death at age 42 had something to do with their odd encounter.

Karnafel believes there is possibly a paranormal side to Bigfoot, and that they likely live underground in caves. He recounted a gripping story about a man who became lost in a familiar forest while on a camping trip. After losing his way, he encountered a "huge shadow" that he instinctively decided to follow. The shadow, described as 7-8 feet tall, appeared to be a Bigfoot when it took a step out of the tree line. The camper then saw bizarre faces morphing out of the trees that seemed to guide him out of an altered reality and back to familiar ground. Karnafel also delved into a woman's case of alien abduction and the strange circumstances in which she met her hybrid daughter, as well as accounts of Dogman, which often have a sinister aspect to them.
