About the show

Guest host Ryan Wrecker (email) welcomed entrepreneur Joel Steele, who explained that his book Life Switch comes from a deeply personal place, shaped by the contrast between the life he once lived and the life he discovered by looking inward. He described experiencing moments that forced him to confront who he did and did not want to become, such as growing up with an abusive father, experiences he chose to use as catalysts for positive change. These turning points revealed to him the idea of a "parallel life," an extraordinary version of one's existence that runs alongside the ordinary one most people accept. His journey taught him that he could either repeat the negative patterns he witnessed or break them entirely, and that choice laid the foundation for his belief that anyone can fundamentally redirect their life by becoming aware of their inner world.

Steele emphasized that discovering one's potential and purpose requires shutting out the external noise that dominates modern life. He repeatedly stressed the importance of solitude, fifteen quiet minutes a day, to tune into the emotions and clues already within oneself. According to Steele, people often look outward for meaning, advice, or identity, even when the most important answers lie within. He shared his belief that emotions function like a silent form of charades, pointing us toward what is missing, what is exciting, and what needs to change. Learning to accept the discomfort of introspection, rather than drown it out with distractions, is the first step toward entering that extraordinary parallel life, he suggested.

Steele described life as a series of choices. Each choice is between the safe, familiar path and the uncomfortable path that leads to growth. His experiences taught him that crossing the metaphorical "tunnel of sludge" is necessary. This represents the difficult and painful parts of personal evolution. Reaching a version of oneself capable of passion, purpose, and fulfillment requires this journey. He argued that success and happiness are built through small, daily actions. One must also be willing to confront true emotions. By identifying potential, discovering genuine passions, and defining a clear purpose, anyone can flip their internal "life switch" from merely existing to truly living, he said.

In the second half, author Jim Paris shared his dramatic story of early financial success followed by a devastating collapse. By his early 30s, he had become a multimillionaire, a licensed stockbroker, an investment company founder, a media personality, and a bestselling author, regularly traveling the world. But everything unraveled in 2001 when an auditing firm discovered large sums of money missing from his brokerage accounts. Paris revealed the culprit was his own brother and internal accountant, who had embezzled more than two million dollars over several years. Paris went from limousines, national television appearances, and business success to losing his company, his home, his cars, and his financial identity. The emotional blow was even greater than the financial one, he noted.

In the midst of that despair, Paris recalled crying out to God, first with prayers focused on asking God to restore his old life exactly as it was. For years, he held tightly to his own plan, wanting his brokerage firm back, his old neighborhood, and the stability he had lost. But nothing changed until he embraced a new way of praying, a listening prayer, in which instead of telling God what he wanted, he asked God what He wanted him to do next. Sitting alone with an empty yellow pad, often for hours, Paris began receiving what he described as specific direction and wisdom, not quick, magical fixes, but step-by-step guidance. As he followed this process, he saw small miracles sustain his family in impossible moments, from unexpected homes and vehicles to surprising acts of kindness.

Through these listening moments and God led steps, Paris said he rebuilt not the life he lost, but a completely new one. He came to see his bankruptcy, foreclosure, repossessions, and professional loss as the beginning of a reinvention. He pursued new vocational paths, including real estate, lending, teaching, ministry, and writing more books. He emphasized that God can transform the broken pieces of a life into something meaningful, but it often requires surrender, openness to change, and the courage to follow unexpected guidance.
