Animal Rights Debate

About the show

At the top of hour two, Art recapped a phone call from a listener who was a militant vegetarian. Then, Bruce Friedrich from the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals joined the program and talked about his organization and its philosophy. Art disagreed with Friedrich throughout the show, and the two engaged in a good-natured but contentious debate about such things as vegetarianism.

Friedrich spoke about what he said were unethical animal treatment practices by McDonald's. Art asked Friedrich if he supported, in spirit or in more than spirit, groups that were damaging testing labs and clinics, like the Animal Liberation Front. Callers debated Friedrich on his principles.

The first and last hours were taken up by news and Open Lines. In hour one, Arts talks about the huge earthquake in Turkey, with 2000 people reported dead. On the Y2K front, Art read a news story about how many states are actually Y2K prepared. He also talks about a photo called the "Lightsource at Putucusi," which seems to show a possible portal on the side of a mountain in Peru, and about the music of his childhood.
