Legendary Willie Nelson

About the show

With admiration and excitement, Art welcomed legendary musician Willie Nelson for the entire program. Nelson, who was speaking from his tour bus (where he practically lived most of the year), recalled events in his life, his career in country music, politics, and his philosophy of life. He recalled early work "picking cotton and baling hay," but that he first felt successful as a musician when he "made a little money playing music" at the age of 9 with a polka band.

Art asked how he knew about Coast to Coast, and Nelson said the musicians and crew on his tour bus were huge fans of the show. He then spoke about the satisfaction of playing a concert at a prison in Texas where a friend was incarcerated. Nelson passionately discussed the plight and decline of the small family farm due to large corporations buying, pricing, and squeezing them out, and pointed out that small farms do not have the environmental impact of factory farms due to waste and pesticides, among other factors.

Art asked about the formation and music of the Highwaymen "supergroup," of which Nelson was a member along with Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, and Kris Kristofferson, and later played their hit song "Highwayman." Nelson commented on the energy he gets from the audience and how this inspires him. Later, he discussed drug legalization, specifically laws around cannabis, and how officials considered it "political suicide," even if they were in favor of it. In the latter part of the program, Nelson answered messages and calls from listeners who often related how much seeing him perform live meant to them.
