Open Lines & Angels

About the show

For this all-night Open Lines, Art started with the news: a bigger cigarette tax; a suit charging racism at Denny's - who paid $46 million (the biggest settlement in history); and parents outraged at a teacher over an inside joke. Art talked about how most shows screen calls and why he prefers not to. A caller in hour 2 discussed why she thinks angels are foot soldiers working for someone other than God. Art said he is searching his feelings about this, and has struggled for years over topics like the afterlife. Another caller shares his belief in what the Bible says about angels. He says their spirits are immortal just like ours.

Art read two faxes during the second half of hour 2 regarding a CNN story about a sci-fi-like E. coli virus that killed six people in Scotland, causing death within 24 hours-- it liquidates fat or muscle at one inch per hour and doctors have been amputating limbs to try and stop it. A faxed comment says this is more scary than an atomic war, and the writer wonders if it's from an experimental lab that "does not exist." Art also compared the novel "The Stand" with a news story he heard regarding disease.
