Open Lines: Hollywood & Politics

About the show

In this special night of Open Lines, the main topic was politics and specifically then-presidential candidate Bob Dole's comments regarding Hollywood. Dole blasted movies like "Natural Born Killers" as a bad influence on the country, and especially on children. Art and some of the callers believed it was a move to cozy up to the religious right and nothing else. The show also examined the similarities and differences between politics in the entertainment industry and Washington.

Art began the evening with news on the ongoing OJ Simpson trial and the possibility of a mistrial. In the second hour, Art read alleged secret diary entries from Pope John XXIII, who served from 1958 to 1963. The entries described apparent visitations from angels, Jesus and Mary and also offered surprising predictions for the year 2000. One such prediction: "Visitors from other worlds arriving in flaming chariots of steel."
