Art was joined in the first two hours by researcher and author Ann Martin who discussed her investigations into the pet food industry. In no uncertain terms, she states that some commercial pet food manufacturers use the rendered bodies of dead dogs and cats to feed our dogs and cats! In 1991, she began to trace how the euthanized bodies of pets were sold from an animal clinic in Ontario, Canada to a broker, who in turn sold them to a rendering plant in Quebec.
The rendering plants, she explained, cook various products including dead animals of all kinds, and restaurant and supermarket waste in a large barrel to create a product known as "meat meal." The meal is also used for livestock feed, she added, so that "in a roundabout way, we in turn are eating our pets."
The topic continues during the remaining three hours of the show which feature Open Lines.
