Military Spying in the USSR

About the show

Stanislav Lunev joined Art in hours 2-4. At the time, he was the highest ranking military defector from Russia-- he had worked for the GRU (the Soviet military intelligence organization during the Cold War). He believes that Russia is preparing for an inevitable war with the US. Art talked about how when he traveled to Russia, he felt uneasy because he was constantly being watched. Lunev was not surprised to hear this – very little has actually changed in Russia, he noted. Lunev was working inside a Soviet agency that spies on "everyone in the world." During the last years of his military service he was assigned to Washington DC. His cover was as a journalist.

When recruiting people, he would look for those not satisfied with their lives – people who needed money or not strongly opposed to selling secrets for money. In Washington DC, Lunev reported that it wasn’t too hard to find these people. He defected in 1992 – Art asks why he’s still alive – and Lunev wonders the same thing. It was a hard decision for him to defect, and after doing so, he spent more than one year talking with American intelligence services.

During the first hour, Art talks about various topics-- the tragedy of Flight 11, the third secret of Fatima, and a funny cat scratching story. Open Lines are featured, as well as in hour 5.
