A photo purportedly showing the infamous Mothman has gone viral in Mexico, however the eerie image in question was actually snapped nearly a decade ago in the United States. The curious and rather confusing case reportedly began early last week when the image, seen above, popped up online in a Facebook post which claimed that it was taken by a terrified family who had encountered a bird-like humanoid in the municipality of Castaños. The peculiar photo and the story surrounding it quickly went viral and were soon picked up by several media outlets in Mexico with many expressing concern that the creature was some kind of harbinger of doom.
Fortunately for those harboring such fears, the picture was instantly recognizable to cryptozoology enthusiasts as a photo that generated headlines back in 2016. The tale attached to the image back then was that it was allegedly taken by an unnamed witness who claimed to have spotted what appeared to be a flying humanoid near, where else but, Point Pleasant, West Virginia, 'home' of the legendary Mothman. Skeptical observers at that time argued that the creature was most likely just a bird carrying a snake or, failing that, some kind of clever hoax. Should the latter scenario be the case, one can't help but tip their cap to the creator of the fabricated photo as it managed to find new life fooling a slew of people on social media in Mexico over the last few weeks.
